Cornell Application - deadline February 1, 2012 for summer 2012 departure

Turn your application into CU Abroad and email Prof. Cowen when you have done so.
Cantabria Application- deadline April 1, 2012 for summer 2012 departure
You will need to apply separately to the Universidad de Cantabria as a visiting student. The application procedure can be found here.
In addition to submitting the application online, you will also need to submit several hard copies of documents by mail. In particular you will need an Exchange Student Certificate. This will be a letter nominating you to the exchange program issued by CU Abroad. You should be able to collect this letter from Prof. Cowen in the spring. Once you have completed the online application, be sure to SAVE and PRINT it. You are required to sign the printed copy and mail it with your application materials.
You can only fill out the online application if you have a valid passport. If you do not have a valid passport, contact Prof. Cowen for a form and mail it in with the other requested materials to start the process of getting a letter of acceptance for the visa. You will need to send in a copy of your passport when you receive it.
Before clicking on the online application you will need to disable any "pop-up" blockers you have running.
When filling out the online application:
1) Under Programme, select USA.
2) Under Degree Currently Studying, enter Batchelor of Science.
3) Under Num. of months, enter the number of months based on your dates. For date of arrival, enter 07/30/XX if you think you might take the August summer session course and 08/31/XX if you know you will only be taking the September summer session course. For date of departure, I suggest 8/31/20XX if you think you might want to stay for an internship (if we can work out the hiring/visa issues). If you know you will not be staying for an internship you can put 7/31/20XX. Note the first day of classes at Cornell for fall of 2012 is Aug 22, 2012. If you are not sure when you want to arrive and depart, list dates that you know will be prior to your arrival and after your departure, so that the letter of invitation shows these dates for your visa. You do not need to enter Spain on the date your visa is first valid but you cannot enter before it is valid and you must leave while it is valid (not expired).
4) Under HOME UNIVERSITY INSTITUTIONAL COORDINATOR, enter: Okihiro, Elizabeth, Student Services Coordinator, Cornell Abroad; USA; Ithaca; 300 Caldwell Hall; 14853; phone: 1-(607) 255-1324; fax 1-(607)255-8700; ero2@cornell.edu.
5) Under HOME UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENTAL COORDINATOR, enter: Cowen, Edwin, Associate Professor; USA; Ithaca; 220 Hollister Hall, CEE; 14853-3501; phone: 1-(607) 255-5140; fax 1-(607)255-9004; eac20@cornell.edu.
6) If you have/will have completed SpanR 123, select Intermediate. If you have/will have completed SpanR 219, select Advanced. For summer language courses your level will be assessed so this is not terribly important.
7) Fill out the table as follows:
¿Quiere que le reservemos alojamiento / Do you wish us to book accommodation?
Mark Si/Yes.
¿Desea participar en el Programa de Orientacion? / Do you wish to take part in our Orientation Programme?
This is up to you. You will have been in Santander for the language course and this orientation is geared toward new students to the area. You will have an orientation specific to the Intercambio program but this might be a way to meet other new students to the University.
¿Esta interesado en seguir el curso de español para estudiantes extranjeros de intercambio que tiene Lugar al comienzo de cada cuatrimestre? Are you interested in following the Spanish course for exchange students that takes place at the beginning of each term?
Mark Si/Yes.
Summer Spanish Language courses offered in Spain prior to start of Academic Year
Spanish language courses will be available in August and again in September prior to the start of the academic year. For summer 2008 the dates were Aug 4-Aug. 29 and Sept 1-Sept 16. Please check with Professor Cowen or on the Cantabria website for current dates. The latter set is an intensive set designed for students from abroad studying at Cantabria for the coming semester and all Cornell students (unless exempted due to proficiency) are required to take this course. Students wishing more in-depth Spanish preparation should consider taking the August course in addition to the September course. During these courses, students have the option to be housed by families screened by the Language Center (Centro de Idiomas de la Universidad de Cantabria) at a cost of 25 euro/day. This includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Liberal distribution credit at the Spanr2XX level will be given for the summer language courses. The August course receives 4 credits and the September course receives 3 credits.

Student Visa for Spain
Don't underestimate this process. Make sure your documents are in order and things should go smoothly. It would be very wise to start watching the rules around Feb. 1 as anything newly enacted for the year should be online by then.
The Consulate General of Spain in New York handles applications from residents of New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey. Since you are full time students at Cornell, you have the option of applying in New York (you will almost certainly need to apply in person).
