Host of the 2007 ASCE Upstate New York Student Conference -- April 13 and 14, 2007!

2007 Student Conference…

The ASCE Upstate New York Regional Conference is one of many conferences hosted throughout the nation.
The annual regional conference is a very important tool for students as they mature through college. Students
come to the conference for two main reasons: the steel bridge and concrete canoe competitions, which
showcase the hard work and effort that students put into their masterpieces.

There is an underlying purposethat most competitors do not realize is part of the competition: the conference
is a venue through which the competitors can come together to realize and expand their knowledge of civil
engineering. The bridge and canoe competitions are merely the platforms on which the learning and growth
take place. Students not only grow to understand the characteristics of steel and concrete, but they
inadvertently develop project management, budgeting, organizational and communication skills.

When all the bridges are built and all the canoe races are over, the students can get together and share their
experiences. They learn about the problems other schools faced throughout the year, how they solved them,
and the lessons they learned with their solution. This short time together teaches the competitors how much
engineers rely on each other for information to stay current with today’s engineering practices.

The last thing this conference does is it reminds us that our field should be fun. If you’re not having fun with
what you’re doing, it’s not worth doing. Please, enjoy the 2007 Upstate New York Regional Conference at
Cornell University!
