CEE 6035 Special Topics in Hydraulics: Atmospheric Boundary Layer Turbulence
Lecture: TR 10P10-11:25 HLS 368
This course will explore the dynamics of turbulent flow and transport in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). The vertical and temporal structure of the ABL will be examined, with attention to the controls and driving forces. An overview will be presented of direct and remote sensing measurement techniques used to quantify states of the ABL. Modern analysis approaches will be explored, with special attention to wavelet transforms, multi fractals, Taken’s embedding theorem, and information theory.. The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) technique will be examined both from the perspective of first principles and by exploring LES results in the context of measurements. The general approach of the course will be to strike a balance between lectures on the underlying theory of the main topics and participatory analysis of results in the primary literature.
