Current Research

Tsunami hazard assessments frequently have been conducted by means of models (such as NLSWE) which are able to simulate important flow features on inundation areas. These models are fed by deterministic inputs (e.g. bathymetry and friction parameters) measured or estimated with a certain resolution and accuracy, which incorporate errors on the modeling results. Additionally, initial perturbations driven by tectonic or landslide tsunamis are not deterministic. By means of stochastic analysis we expect to quantify the error (in the instruments, friction models, initial perturbation and spatial acquisition of bathymetry) and to know how these errors propagate from model inputs to the results. This analysis will help to describe tsunami inundations from a practical probabilistic perspective.
