Liu receives two honors

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

Philip Liu, the Class of 1912 Professor of Engineering and the Director of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell, has recently garnered two awards which, taken together, paint an apt portrait of Professor Liu’s work and his standing in the field of Civil Engineering.

The first recognition comes from the editorial board of the Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering, who have selected a paper by Liu as one of only five Outstanding Papers published in the journal in 2013. The paper, “Advective Diffusion of Contaminants in the Surf Zone,” was co-written by Liu, PhD student Pato Winckler, and MIT professor emeritus Chiang Mei.

The other award was granted by the Department of Civil Engineering at National Taiwan University and it honors Liu not for one particular paper but instead for a distinguished career as a civil engineer. Liu was named an Outstanding Alumnus by the university. He received his BS in Civil Engineering from the university in 1968. To be chosen an Outstanding Alumnus, a person must first be nominated by another alumnus and then chosen by the selection committee, which consists of four faculty members in the department (including the chair), and three alumni.
