Francis Vanek earned bachelors degrees from Cornell University in 1991 in Mechanical Engineering and in Asian Studies, and a doctoral degree in Transportation Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1998. He taught at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland from 1998 to 2001, in the Center for Logistics Research. Since 2001 he has served as a Lecturer and Research Assistant in the College of Engineering at Cornell University, and since 2003 as a Lecturer in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering. He is a member of the Transportation Systems group in CEE, with a particular focus on sustainable transportation energy options. Courses taught include Civil Infrastructure Systems and Engineers for a Sustainable World, which is a project-based service learning course focused on energy, the environment, and development. He is coauthor with Lou Albright of the forthcoming book (in Spring 2008) entitled "Energy Systems Engineering: Evaluation and Implementation", to be published by McGraw-Hill.
