John Mbwana received an undergraduate degree in civil engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) - Tanzania, and a M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in transportation engineering from Cornell University. He joined Cornell faculty in the fall of 1993 as a visiting scientist. Prior to coming to Cornell, he was a faculty member in the department of civil of engineering at UDSM from 1981 to 1993. While on sabbatical from UDSM (1987-1988), Mbwana worked as a transportation analyst/consultant with Howard-Humphreys Consulting Company in United Kingdom. At UDSM and Cornell, Mbwana has taught courses, researched and provided consulting services in the areas of transportation engineering, planning, highway/pavement/traffic engineering, intelligent transportation systems and developing decision support systems for transportation related problems. Mbwana has authored and co-authored a number of publications in the above areas. In addition to teaching and research, Mbwana also administered several programs. At UDSM he was a director of engineering undergraduate admissions & advising (1986-1987), and a director of technology transfer & professional development program in the Department of Civil Engineering, (1984-1987). At Cornell he has been (since 1996) the program administrator of a Cornell-based transportation infrastructure research think-tank that advises and conducts infrastructure research for the New York State Department of Transportation.
