The study of the motion of gravel, sand, and silt in flows of water.  Traditional descriptions and more recent mathematical models for sediment transport and related dynamics: rolling, sliding, jumping, collisions, and turbulent suspensions.  Instability of the bed and evolution of bed geometry.


Mass and momentum balance in the context of sediment transport and bed geometry; Particle properties, grain size distributions, and fall velocities; Channel hydraulics, turbulence, and bed stresses; Threshold of motion, bed-load transport, turbulent suspension, and wash-load; Mixtures and sorting; Bed geometry and bed-forms.  Quantitative model development will include: Incipient motion; Saltation; Collisional interactions; Turbulent suspension; Bed instability; and Bed-forms.


There will be four homework assignments and a take-home project in the final week. The project will be based on the backgrounds and interests of the students. Each assignment will count equally toward the final grade.
