Julianne Quinn receives First Place Dissertation Award from the University Council on Water Resources

Quinn ’17, a postdoctoral associate in Professor Pat Reed’s group, has been named the first place recipient of the Universities Council on Water Resources (UCOWR) 2018 Ph.D. Dissertation Award in the category of Natural Science and Engineering.

Julianne Quinn ’17, a postdoctoral associate in Professor Pat Reed’s group, has been named the first place recipient of the Universities Council on Water Resources (UCOWR) 2018 Ph.D. Dissertation Award in the category of Natural Science and Engineering. Each year, UCOWR recognizes two outstanding Ph.D. dissertations on water issues, one in Water Policy and SocioEconomics, and the other in Natural Science and Engineering. 

Quinn’s research focuses on better characterizing risks in water resources systems to inform the design of robust multi-objective control policies. Her dissertation, "Characterizing and managing deeply uncertain risks in coupled human-natural systems," advanced methods for discovering interactions and dependencies between elements of human and natural systems to 1) better characterize risks to each component, and 2) use this improved risk characterization to better manage the coupled system. Her work focused on two socio-ecological systems serving multiple objectives: a managed lake and a multi-reservoir system. 

The award consists of a certificate, a cash prize, and a complimentary conference registration for the 2018 UCOWR/NIWR Annual Water Resources Conference, June 26-28, at the Pittsburgh Marriott City Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Quinn will present her abstract as an oral presentation. She will be acknowledged during the UCOWR Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, June 27, as part of the conference agenda.

Quinn received a B.S. in Earth and Environmental Engineering from Columbia University in 2011 and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University with Prof. Reed in 2017.
